Can anyone help before I do this incorrectly.

Bit of diy after vw cam chain gate

Tighten securing nuts in three stages and the specified sequence -A- to -H-.
Stage 1: 18 Nm
Stage 2: 12 Nm
Stage 3: 12 Nm
Im under the impression that I need to torque to 18nm, then back off then re tighten to 12nm, back off again then to 12nm and recheck?

Thanks in advance

Need to know either your reg, chassis or engine code to check this against the workshop manual 8)

Reg is yx60hcp
6r cbzb

The sequence I posted is from correct Manuel

Cheers

Just looked at the manual. It would imply 18 nm, back it off, then 12nm, then back it off then 12nm

Thanks for that. Would you say to follow that as it seems quite loose. And from judging on the carbon built up and residue on the gasket it must have been leaking at them specs. Tempted to go 20 back off, 20and recheck. Would you you advise not to or will I be ok?

Use new nuts and a new gasket and do it as per VWs specification. It’s like it for a reason

It says to use high temperature paste on the thread of the nut too

It may be that it doesn’t need to be backed off thinking about it as the gasket will compress

Do it to 18 all the way around then 12 then 12

Just clarifying what I done for anyone in the future

So I tightened to 18nm in correct sequence

As I came back to re check torque they had slackend off so I carried on with 18nm.

I’m suspecting this is the reason for the 12 nm, after the first round of 18nm when going round checking torque this should be dropped to 12nm, then recheck again at 12nm.

I will re post to let people know if finishing on18nm is a reliable method.

Again thanks for the reply’s
