has anyone replaced the seals on their 6c gti rear calipers.

one of mine has got a nick in the piston seal and ive had to purchase a repair kit with all the seals etc just wondering if anyone has done it and how hard it would be

Should be same as any other caliper, just that they're a bit red

Or are you meaning a nick/tear in the outer dust cover caused by someone being a bit clumsy when servicing the brakes?

If it is just the outer dust cover, if I were you, I'd only replace that part on that age of car, when/if the piston seals and the handbrake actuator rod seal need replaced due to old age, I'd replace all rubber parts on both sides of the car.

i think its the outer boot that surrounds the piston. ive bought the full kit in case i find anything else when fixing it
yes it was me. i was swapping out the worn discs and somehow caught the boot. didnt even notice until the next day when i had no brakes

If it was just the outer dust cover, that wouldn't cause loss of brakes. It's just to keep dust away from the sliding surface of the piston. If the car has lost brakes due to fluid leaking out, then the piston seals are damaged, and there is also a risk the piston is damaged if it has been dented.

ive got a feeling the piston isnt seating correctly which is why i bought the full kit. all i know is theres a slight tear in the outer cover and fluid is leaking out therefore no breaks

Hi. It's not too hard of a job.
Replace the cylinder and the cylinder seal (rubber ring).
What might be tricky is putting the rubber boot/dust cover round the cylinder and caliper seating...
Next time you service the brakes, spray same WD40 around the rubber seal and under it, so that you won't nick it when pressing/screwing the piston/cylinder back in.

I worry a bit about suggesting WD-40, will it not annoy the piston seal material and cause it to swell? That is why red brake grease, which is vegy based is normally used where there sealing material nearby, I know WD-40 used to be based on Castor oil, but I'm guessing that nowadays its also got synthetic oils mixed into it.

I do agree with you about replacing the cylinder/piston, as it sounds like it has been scored and that will continue to cut through any new seals that get fitted.

The dust cover, is the plan not to invert the dust cover and fit it over the piston end into the groove provided in it before fitting the piston into the calliper, then roll it back over and get it to fit into the groove in the calliper?
