WHAT and HOW MUCH do i need to buy?

Brake fluid i mean!
Don't want to spend too much on stuff that can't be easily stored, but don't want to run out halfway thru. Planning on a full system flush-through till all parts of the hydraulics are full of nice clean new fluid.

Thing is I haven't the foggiest how much this will require, or which type is best. My manual seems stuck together on that page.

100, 250, 500ml, 1 Litre?
And is DOT4 good enough, or merely adequate? 5.1 be better?

Cheers
:)

(premature bump as im off to halfords soon)

EDIT went GSF instead. Cheap enough there for OEM style DOT4 that i dont give a crap about wasting a bit out of the almost-a-litre (985ml, wierd) they supplied. "you'll need more than 500ml to flush out a polo, mate" they said, "litre should just about do it"... well i hope so cuz i've only got a couple of 1-pint jamjars in which to catch the stuff!
And a Gunson Eezi-Bleed from halfords, which seemed to be worth every penny of it's £13 last time i saw one in action.

However now i've got a new problem: bleed nipples that havent been used in probably 5 years (obviously the garage used very good fluid at the last change!) and have rusted tight. Blasted hell out of them with WD40, trying to avoid contamination on discs/pads and into drums, left to soak in overnight, let's see what happens.
That, and the fact I don't have a 7mm (5? 6? 8?) spanner anywhere in the house, so i'll be back off the shops to get something of that tidgy size, so i can get the rear nipples off. And maybe a 10/11mm ring because i nearly rounded one of the fronts right off trying to force it with a regular 11mm C-spanner.
Gurg.
