Fuel tank size

Hi guys!
So my first fill, i managed to get it down to say about 20~30km remaining i think, i filled up and it took 38L(8.35Gal?). From what i read it's a 40L(8.8Gal?) tank. Does this mean i only had 2L(.44Gal) left or is there a backup reserve?
Reading the manual i am not sure if it's 33L(7.25Gal) + 7L(1.54Gal) reserve, or 40(8.

+ 7L(1.54) reserve.
Hopefully my gallon conversions are ok!

Same for me the on the last fill, I have the Digi dash so my fuel gauge is a line of white vertical bars on the right of the display, when I get down to reserve (say last 7 ltrs) the very bottom bar turns red. Its deffo a 40l tank. On my last fill It took 38l and I firmly believe I had just 2l left as I had been showing red for some time.
I would have liked the tank was a 50l tank though, the extra range and therefore less visits to petrol pump would have been nice and I think on the GTI the range from a 40l tank must be annoying. Im getting around the 400mile from a tank (usable tank being 38l of course) depending on the driving I do, about town and this time of year I can expect 380 mils, in winter the same use will probably give 360. Summer long motorway, I was getting 420 out of around 38l.

I’ve just put my second fill up in since getting my car R line
Normally I will get a range of 380 miles
My last fill up was my first fill up since delivery and I was lucky the car made it to 300 miles

Hopefully it improves a bit as a run it more
I would have also liked a bigger tank and range to save me running back and forth to the pump

Just did my first long trip and managed 5.8L/100km long distance (NZ still has crap roads, it may be 100km/hr but windy and up/down hill so can never get great mileage)
That's about 42mpg
Around "town" which is my short drive to work (about 15kms of 50k/hr max zone of up/down corners and stops with traffic) best i get is about 8~9L/100km. It's kind of what i expected due to the nature of the distance and road.
Which is 35~31 mpg
Makes it expensive when our fuel is $2.50 / L (something like $6 pounds/gallon?)
But i love driving the GTI it really is a nice car, with plenty of passing power.

I'm under the impression it's a 45L tank. I've filled up 40.2L before hand with the range on 0. Parker's spec list online says 45L.

The Polo brochure states the fuel tank is 40L with this in the fine print: "The size of the fuel tank is approximate and therefore it may be possible to add a greater amount of fuel than the size of the tank specified, due to the space in the filler neck."

It's surprising how much you can get in the fill-up pipe between the bodywork and the tank it's self. In the Mrs Nissan Note diesel, if I neck it while filling it, you can get just over the 100 miles before the needle drops down to the full mark (F) on the gauge. Also when you neck it when filling so you can see the fuel in the neck, it's the most accurate way of getting a true MPG figure, never take the cars computer as being accurate, take that with a pinch of salt.

Definitely. I worked it out last time I did a good run and the computer said 58 and I worked out 54 so it's not far off...
