1.0 110 TSI vs 1.2 110 TSI - which is best?

Post by dan98 » Mon Dec 03, 2018 12:47 pm

Hi all,

As per the title, has anyone driven both of these and care to offer an opinion on which is best?

Any thoughts on reliability or drive ability of the two?

The 1.0 replaced the 1.2 around 2015 I think, but they seem to be about the same price / year, and both Euro 6.
Was the 1.2 meant to be troublesome, or was that the older version?

Cheers!

The older version of the 1.2TSI engine, which had 8 valves, chain driven cam shaft and the turbo mounted at the front of the engine, was the version that caused a few problems with owners. The 2015> 1.2TSI which has 16 valves, belt driven cam shaft and the turbo mounted at the back of the engine, so far does not seem to have been causing many problems for owners even although over 3 years has passed since it was put into production. Some very early ones had issues with the variable timing inlet cam shaft pulley - but unless you are considering late 2014/early 2015 build cars that should not be an issue.

I'd can't claim to have had any experience in driving the similar powered 1.0TSI 3 cylinder engine, though being sort of conventional in mind and spirit, I'd go for a 4 cylinder with the higher capacity every time.

Now I'll need to prepare for incoming flack!

Very helpful - thanks.
I had been considering a 2015 1.2, I don't know if it's one of the early ones.

Maybe I'll steer towards the 1.0 version to be on the safe side.

I think that you should try driving both before making a decision as it has been said that they are quite different in the way they perform.

I had hoped that you would have said that you were going for a more mature design giving that level of power out, ie the 1.2TSI 16V 110PS which also had the 6 speed gearbox.

It's been difficult to find a car in the right spec nearby (and work / time pressures) so haven't been able to make a direct comparison yet.

I get the concept of a more 'mature' engine, but also thought maybe I should bite the bullet and go for the most modern design. Still undecided - and good to hear of any opinions in how the drive varies.

Thanks

I think that I've failed in my attempt to guide you in the direction of the 4 cylinder 1.2TSI 16V 110PS engine.

I have read that there is a significant difference in character and driveability between these different engines, emissions concerns seem to be what forced many car makers to make down to 3 cylinders for a smaller engine size. In its latest version, the 1.0TSI does seem to get paired up to some nasty gearboxes that put economy far before driveability so maybe not so pleasant to live with, even with the early 1.0TSI the torque curve is a lot different to the older 1.2TSI, so again, really do make the effort/find time to try one of each type before you buy - maybe the 1.0TSI 115PS will tick all your boxes, who knows.

One of the leading VW Group board members, who has an engineering background, was reported, in one of these VW Group motoring forums, to have said that the days of the roughly 100+PS 1.0 3 cylinder engine may be over and that that power output will start to come from less highly tuned slightly bigger engines, it has been said that Ford's equivalent engines, with similar and more output are brilliant at being economical is driven slowly but extremely greedy if driven any faster - and then they randomly go pop, which is a bit annoying as I've always admired Ford's small car offerings!

I think that it is obvious which engine I would suggest as my wife has an August 2015 1.2TSI 110PS and I have not heard brilliant things about the same age 1.0TSI 115PS - when we ordered my wife's car, a Polo 1.2TSI 110PS SEL, back in April 2015, we were warned that it might appear as a 1.0TSI 115PS as the order books at the factory were about to close for any 1.2TSI 110PS engined cars - that was VW Group being extremely optimistic with regards to ramping up the production of 1.0TSI 115PS engines. From that I'd think that your choice of 1.0TSI 115PS Polos from 2015 should be very limited.

Thanks very much for the detailed answer.
I did take on board your advice, and also got my own impression that the 1.0 wouldn't be the best choice.
I didn't get the chance to drive it but did plenty of research - it improves emissions but sounds like it's less smooth to drive and potentially not as durable for high mileages.

The long and short of it meant that I've purchased a nice 2015 SEL 1.2 110 in black - it's smooth, pretty quiet and powerful enough.

Cheers

Excellent, is it a 6SPD or DSG gearbox?

Both are good and runs very well. The 1,0 is the newest motor of the two but havent heard anything bad. The new polo comfortline is a 1,0 with 115hp/200nm. Same as Ibiza 115 fr. Maybe to new so the weak spots have not been discovered??

It’s the 6 speed version - I guess I’m a bit old fashioned, but just prefer a manual.

That's okay, my wife's car is a very late 2015MY Polo 1.2TSI 110PS 6SPD SEL 5 door.
