RPM hovers around 10k when idle

Hi guys, can anyone shed some light on this, I dont think it did this a few days ago but I've noticed when I turn my car on the rev counter goes straight to 10k then works like normal from there but seems to treat 10k as 0, the engine doesn't sound or feel like it has a fast idle speed so I'm guessing it a problem with the dial?.. thanks in advance!
