Metal piece from sump plug

Hi all,
Last year serviced the polo (1.4tdi, AMF) myself and bought a magnetic sump plug (for the first time, on offer at ECP).
This year had it serviced from local indy as I didnt have the time.
Showed me about a six inch piece of metal which he pulled from the sump plug (attached to the magnet), it looked flattened, twisted and bent no thincker than 5mm. He said the engine runs fine, which is true not heard any difference in it, no knocking or anything.
Obviously concerning.
Just wondering what are peoples thoughts on what to do now.
(note: recent work includes EGR valve and timing belt)
