According to this link, which is the dealer I bought my car from, the dataplug is free on all cars.

https://www.john-clark.co.uk/volkswagen ... data-plug/

but nothing on any others.

I've unplugged mine and deleted the app.
It seems to only connect when you're in the car, which makes it the most useless app ever.
When I tried to have a nosey at any info from the comfort of my sofa.....nothing....
I'm used to BMW and Nissan apps that give you info anywhere, so this one struck me as spectacularly crap.

Its ultimately a data harvesting tool also, so they can track your speed, your ECU, a remap, your location - all very valuable!

Does it really do all that, or is it just an unconfirmed 'conspiracy theory'?
If it's true, I'm glad I unplugged it.
I wouldn't want how I drive my car to affect any warranty claims in comparison with someone who doesn't use one.

It does, it tracks everything. Apparently the data is for internal use, but equally, it captures alot.

Yes, it does track and capture all of this data. So, by using the data plug, you’re giving VW lots of information on how and where you use your car. Big brother is watching you.............although no doubt VW would say that understanding how owners use their vehicles helps them in the development of new models.

I don’t have a data plug and have no desire to have one; this also seems to be the general consensus of forum members on one of the Golf forums. I assume that with future new VW models, the choice will be taken away from the car owner and this data capture will be automatic, although presumably the owner’s consent would need to be obtained.

In the Nissan Leaf, permission for the telematics to send info to Nissan is required every time you start the car.
It's such a pain, pressing yes or no on the screen every...flipping.....time....
It's only recording battery condition etc.
Allegedly.

You get nothing for nothing. Data plug, Facebook etc. If you're not paying for it, you are the product.

That Data plug is probably sending more to VW than it's giving you.

If you want one you can have mine - had it for nearly 3 years but never used! Find VCDS much more useful :)

Probably saw me standing it on its nose from 100mph the other night too.
Took a while to get there mind you.

Hopefully I’ve confused the s**t out of mine as I’ve plugged it into the wife’s Arona, it will have some German choking on his sauerkraut in Wolfsburg :D :D :D
