Any Help Appreciated

Hi guys,
Just replaced the spark plugs on my car. after taking the engine cover off, noticed (whats called a breather pipe or valve cover breather hose??? ) on the haynes manual.... isnt connected anywhere. Where should the bottom end of the breather pipe go, as the top is connected to the engine cover & air filter area. is it important and does it need to be fitted back asap? i assume its been loose for a while and the cars ran fine.
PS- newbie on these things! ive added a pic from the haynes website where the breather pipe is is ....
