Bangernomics (transmission clunk) 9n 1.4 BBY Auto

Since 50K had an intermittent/occasional problem with clunking transmission shift when slowing down and then setting off again. Recently, at 109K, this has become more of an issue. OH mentioned that when pulling away in first (engine warm or cold) on several occasions shift from 1 to 2 has been very clunky, with car not progressing forward smoothly or with confidence. Also, during that shift period, and after, there has been a noise that sounds like a pump/whirring. Took the 9n out myself the other night but could not replicate the fault. One thing I did not do though was slow down from a higher speed, say 50, then take of from a rolling start or standstill.
The car does have some electrical gremlins, including a glowing/fading rear fog lamp warning when the side lights are on (which seems not to occur if the main beams are on), a rear wiper that does not work, and a tailgate that does not release on central locking (key).
Any thoughts please?
