Has anyone seen any decent GTI or VW number plate holders? I’m thinking about getting 3D gel plates but I want a decent holder for them as they don’t come with screw holes. I’m not sure how flimsy some of these holders are off eBay!

You just transfer the holes from your original number plates to the gel plates.

I don’t have a drill

Just use double sided sticky tape looks better than any plate holder, makes no noise, no holes in the bumper and it looks clean

Use the 3M double sided VHB foam automotive tape or similar.

You can use double sided tape which I've done to hold mine on, or velcro straps work well too. If you really want you can take the grill off and use very strong magnets lol. A friend of mine done it on his abarth, never fallen over

If your going down the double sided tape route, for a belt and braces job, also use some silicone sealant between the tapes.

Thanks all, I’ll have a think about what route I want to go down. Out of interest, for those who have 3D gel plates, where did you get yours from?

I would strong advise against using silicone sealant to stick your plates on.

The silicone curing process evolves pure acetic acid (ever smelt that vinegary smell when sealing a sink or shower tray in?), much stronger than uric acid in bird crap that scars paintwork.

It'll almost certainly scar your paintwork where it is applied. You may never see it behind the plate holder, so it might not matter, but if you buy decent automotive double sided foam tap it'll be unnecessary anyway.

Have you considered pressed plates for your car?

Yeah I want to avoid anything that would damage the paintwork. I have but I do prefer the 3D gel ones now. Pressed plates can look dull (I prefer shiny).

I vote for double-sided foam sticky pads, plenty of them. Any reputable number plate manufacturer will give you a selection of mounting options at checkout and double side stickies are the cheapest and IMHO the best-looking mounting option.

I've been running double-sided stickies on my 4D plates since getting the car detailed and they haven't budged and are on there super tight.

One thing to be aware of is security. If someone wants your plates then they can be removed with a bit of fishing line fairly easily. If security is your concern then security screws would be your best bet.

Car's not arriving till December, but I've bought some 14" plates online already. Neat. With black border. No junk dealer info.

I told my dealer specifically not to drill holes in the bumpers. So he asked me how is he supposed to install his number plate holders.
I told him that the number plate holders displaying the name of the dealer is advertising on my car and that costs 100 bucks a month on the invoice... plus VAT. And if they come close to my bumper with a drill, I will issue them an invoice for a new bumper. Needless to say, I picked up the car with no holes, no number plate holders advertising the dealer....
That is your car, the dealer can as much as politely ask you if you would be so kind as to display his advertisement for free on your car.... However, I boggles my mind how many people actually do it for free...

Will have to get in touch with my dealership as i don't want them to drill holes into my bumpers either. Not too fussed about the dealership advertisement side of things but the drilled holes will just annoy me after paying good money for something for them to just drill it.

I thought all U.K. models already came with holes?
