Low coolant 1.2 TSI

Post by Black6c » Wed Dec 04, 2019 6:50 pm

I have noticed a few weeks ago that the coolant in the coolant reservoir was sitting below minimum. So I went to the local vw shop and got it inspected. They said there were no visible leaks (looks clean underneath) and that everything’s fine. They topped up the coolant to above max, but today I noticed that it had dropped by a significant amount to near minimum. Is this engine known to use coolant? Is this normal?

Is car running as normal?

Check oil level in case cylinder head gasket is worn and allowing water to leak into engine which can mix with oil.

Losing coolant is not a know issue with this engine, filling the coolant back up to above the MAX level may well mean that some will get forced out at your local temperatures, but my wife's 2015 Polo 1.2TSI 110 6MT has never ever needed its coolant topped up and the level does not move very much from cold to running with a hot engine.

If the cooling system has been opened up recently, it is possible that trapped air has moved along and into the header tank - and that will drop the indicated level.
