1987 mk2 polo underseal?

Hi everyone
It's my first post on the forum
I have started to restore my polo coupé ordered the repair panels and got stuck in cut off the sill rear arch and tool off the front wing. I was grinding the underseal and seam sealer prepping for welding when my friend popped in and said be careful underseal contains asbestos on old cars, just wondering if anyone on here knows if VW used asbestos in underseal?? Any help would be greatly appreciated
