Quick question.

Is it normal to feel the downshifts from top gear (6) under heavy braking conditions and then when it goes from 3rd into 2nd an even sharper braking.

Anyone else noticed that the brakes are really sharp on the gti's?

Even after 5800 miles my brakes still feel very sensitive.

Yes brakes are still sharp at 4.8k miles for me too.
And also yes, if you brake quite hard you'll feel the gears changing down.

Mine is coming up to 10k and they are still quite sharp, so just trying to get a census on it.. [emoji3]

One last question...

Let's say you were fully using the GTi to its full capabilities. Heavy acceleration and then sharp braking with then full throttle to accelerate away, do you find that you sometimes you get a bite back like the car wasn't prepared for it. Thinks it needs second when actually third would have been suitable [emoji848][emoji848]

I'm just trying to understand the car better and see if what I experience others do too.. [emoji106][emoji106]

Not personally, but someone on this forum has, I remember it..
Something about stamping on the accelerator and the car snapping to second gear even though there was only about 500rpms left before 3rd was needed.

Out of curiosity do you have the reversing hum that I and some others are experiencing?
I've got a 2019 GTI+

Oh boy do I !
The day I collected my car it hummed its way out of the dealership doors [emoji1787]
I like to think of it as a cow mooing or maybe a distant train horn..

Had my pads roughed up and changed but no success.
Currently the dealership have no fix for it.


Fun story for you, the dealership roughed up my brake pads to stop the humming, but my parking brake on one side got stuck on without them knowing.
I drove 5 miles home with my rear passenger brake sticking ever so slightly. By the time I got home the disc was glowing and the smell was horrendous.
Because of that, I was given new pads on both sides, a new rear passenger disc, and a brake flush in case the fluid had boiled.
Still had the humming too ! Fuming.

It's a bit of a joke really, surely VW should be looking at a fix.

Surely if you had the noise humming when you collected it, wouldn't it be grounds for a rejection?

I can't believe that the dealership didn't check before handing the car back to you, I like you would be absolutely livid.

You've probably seen the threads I have been posting on but I've had the humming for close to a year now and quite frankly I'm a bit fed up with it as it so loud its unreal. The dealership can't do anything as VW technical said they are working on a repair, do you think the pads might still be slightly applied though even when driving forward?

Long story short I've gone down the route of possible rejection or some form of compensation as I personally think it's unacceptable that VW still haven't fixed the issue given its nearly been a year...

That was me. Sometimes the DSG box does seem a bit brainless like that. It seems to have a very strong preference for wringing every gear, rather than using torque.

The way DSG does that and the way it feathers in gear changes, even under hard acceleration, it seems that the drivetrain mechanics aren't that robust and DSG has to do a lot to protect itself.

I suspect this is the reason that launch control supposedly only has so many goes - I'd assume launch control doesn't do clutch feathering on the up shifts and takes a heavy toll on the clutch packs and/or other components.

I'll be the first to let you know as your not the only one who is fed up with it lol.

Personally I think VW are dragging their heels on it tbh, given some people have had close to year, I mean the cost of the car, these noises shouldn't be there!

Mine was a software update (some kind of wipe dry occasional automatic very light application of the brakes type setting). I didn't get new pads or discs, although some have had them.

It has cut moving down by about 90% - I get a moo on the first brake press when reversing, but none after that. It is still bad on the wife's but she hasn't had hers in yet. We'll get it done on the first service (May).

It's strange that some people's issues are being fixed quicker than others and how some don't require replacement parts but just software.

I think it's down to the braking system in reverse but very hard to determine the root cause.
In neutral with the car lifted up and engine running, you can freely spin the rear wheels without issue. There's the slightest bit of resistance but this would be down to the wheel hub and not the brake.

Didn't try this when the car was in reverse as the mechanic didn't want my driving wheels rotating under power on his lift.
