Polo Problems

Hello everyone,
Just thought I could get some opinions from others about my Polo.
It’s a 68 plate SEL with the 1.0 6-speed 115ps engine, in Pure White. Unfortunately, it’s been nothing but trouble since collecting it from brand new in November 2018. I’ll put a list of the issues:
1. Handbrake problems.
2. Front Assist issues.
3. Apple Car Play.
4. Interior lighting.

I’ll go more in depth now about these problems:
1. The handbrake is the biggest issue for me. Firstly, about 6 months after receiving the car, the handbrake started to feel awful. It was very tight and sticky. It took a real effort to pull it up enough to hold the car. We took it to the dealership and they replaced the cables under warranty. Now, 6 months later, it feels as though the same thing has happened. However, the dealership are saying there is nothing wrong and that Polo handbrakes are just naturally ‘graunchy’ (according to their lead technician).

2. The Front Assist caused numerous problems, being dangerous too. It would just make a ear piercing ‘beep’ noise and slam on the brakes, almost to a halt (this could be on a dual carriageway). This problem is fixed now though, but it did take huge effort to make the dealership see that there was an issue. (They replaced the front camera in the badge).

3. I have just given up with using Apple Car Play now. Nearly every single tiny bump I go over on the road, it disconnects. I can only play my music through Bluetooth now. However, it seems to work with Android Auto. Dealership gave me new legit VW cables to try in the car, but no luck.

4. Finally, I noticed last week, when I had a courtesy car, which was also an SEL Polo, that it had a little LED light in the cubby where you can put your phone. I enquired about this to the dealership, as mine has never worked. They just said that it’s an optional extra and that there is no bulb fitted. So, I got my phone in there and took a pic, which revealed a bulb! All the other interior ambient lighting works, except this little light. I can’t believe a tiny light like this, is an optional extra!?

Sorry to have whittled on, but a car which isn’t even two years old shouldn’t have these problems. I hate the car and am at my wits end with it. Just wondered if anyone else has the same sort of issues and if going through VW Customer Care is worth the effort?

Thanks for reading 😊

Hello,
From what I have heard I believe the handbrakes had a recall a while back and there is a topic on this (viewtopic.php?f=71&t=72921). The front assist on your vehicle sounds like it could either be too sensitive or maybe have a defect/dirt on the actual sensor which could cause an issue. With the Apple Car Play it sounds like there is a faulty connection within the unit itself. And finally regarding the little LED light if it was me I would present the image to your local dealer as 'proof' and request all the issues you have stated above are fixed or you will take it further, through whichever route is best.

Hi, thanks for your reply!

Whilst I took the car in for the handbrake cables to be replaced, they also sorted out the issue of the recall too, apparently.
I have shown the dealership the photo I took of the light, and they are still saying that it just wasn’t fitted! I don’t understand why VW would integrate it, but not have it working... is it standard on all Polo specs, or just higher specs?
I have now emailed VW Customer Care and waiting for a response.

I would imagine a small light that lights up the phone tray is standard across the range, can't imagine it wouldn't be. I know I definitely have it on mine (GTI+) and I have seen them on other Polos with the ambient lighting so I do not see why you shouldn't also have it.

Exactly what I thought! Glad I’m not on my own here, dealership are making me think that I’m going crazy! Apparently they have all the paperwork, stating that this very light is not fitted  I am struggling to believe them though...

Maybe contact a dealer far out of your area and ask them if this specific light is included, that way your local dealer can't fob you off.

Yeah, think I will do that! I know it’s only a little light and that it’s not really worth all the hassle, but it’s the principle of it all. Thank you for all of your advice 😊
