VW Polo rattling noise

Hi, new to the forum and also new to Polo ownership (only ever owned Volvos and Jap cars).
Recently picked up a 2004 1.4tdi and it has a strange rattling noise. Regardless of cold or hot. It is rather loud.
Does not make the noise when driving. Only when idling after driving. If the clutch is depressed then the noise dissapears but comes back as soon as the pedal is let back out.
But here is the bizzare one, if you blip the throttle the noise dissapears completely. When you then depress the clutch and let it back out the noise does not come back. Only after driving for a while.
Other than just being a bit of a noisy engine, it runs very smooth and accelerates and changes gear excelently.
Any ideas?
