Hi everyone, tonight I ran out of fuel and the EML light and the diesel element flashing light have come on - https://youtu.be/DZam9eswdlQ

I was low on fuel and went to a local fuel garage but they had closed early so I went to another one and they also closed early and on the way to the third one the two symbols came up. I have restarted the engine and driven it a little but it still is there. Will this eventually go out after a few miles or has this ever happened to others? I know it was really low on fuel when the lights came on but I don’t know why it’s still on now I’ve refilled

I would hope that by fuelling and doing some driving, the ECU would realise there is nothing a miss.

Unfortunately no it’s the same. I took it on a 20 mile round trip on Tuesday evening and still no difference, yesterday I took it on a 30 mile round trip with revs between 3-4K and still no change. I notice that when I turn the key 1 position the glow plug flashes straight away and the engine light stays on before the engine is started. My OBD scanner says it’s p2463 DPF accumulation. I think what’s happened is I’ve been taking it on short trips lately and not warming it up fully, as well as running low on fuel so it couldn’t initiate a regen.

Should I take it on another long run at motorway speeds in 4th and for how long roughly?

If the DPF has become blocked, then a longer drive in a lower gear can help, but not in all instances - e.g. if the level of soot deposits have reached saturation level. However, with a car around two years old, I’d have thought it unlikely that the DPF saturation level has been reached. As you’ve already made a couple of longer journeys at higher engine rpm’s which hasn’t rectified the issue, this suggests there might be some other issue where it might be appropriate to get your dealer or a good independent VW specialist to investigate - assuming their workshop is still operating under the current lockdown. As your car is still under warranty, I’d be inclined to get the VW dealer to check it out. Some dealers during the current lockdown are doing collection and delivery of customer cars from and to the customer’s home, to avoid people having to make what might be considered to be a ‘non essential’ journey.

I personally wouldn’t be thinking of going on a long run at present - especially over the Easter period when the government instruction Is for people to stay at home. There may well be an increased police presence on the roads over this period to check why people are travelling and if your were stopped, the police probably wouldn’t consider the purpose of your journey to be an ‘essential journey’ as per the government lockdown guidelines.

Got someone from the AA coming to take a look at it today. Maybe they can find more information through the OBD port than my scanner can. I’m hoping they have diesel additive they can pour into the tank and give it a long run to clear it out. Or somehow initiate an active regen on the drive.

The AA technician came and saw there are 6 codes in the ECU 3 are generic codes, and the others Volkswagen codes. He couldn't read what the Volkswagen ones are but he went to show me what the generic ones were and when he rescanned them the car cleared them and they're not showing any. I noticed that when he turned the ignition on, the glow plug and engine light don't stay on now and a message "Particulate filter see owners manual" pops up which didn't happen before. He said because of the three Volkswagen codes coming up he can't read them with his computer so he's getting a Volkswagen tech out on Monday.

Try to perform a service regeneration. After that clear the static values

All good! First engineer cleared the codes and the warning I should have got at the start was now showing “Particulate filter”.
Reasons this happened was fuel was nearly non existent, Lots of short trips due to lockdown, and engine wasn’t getting to temp.
