Air Filter

Hi all.
Today I decided to check my air filter on my 1.0 TSI which was "changed" for its 30000km service. The reason why I put "changed" in quotation marks is that I don't believe it was changed during the service. I've only driven 6000km since the service. This looks way too old in my eye. Thoughts?
I also feel like the process to change the air filter on this particular engine is unnecessarily complicated in a typical German fashion.

Do you live in an area of high dust or high pollution as this will impacts on how dirty/quickly the air filter gets? What was the filter like before the service?

Hum, if I remember correctly from replacing the filter on my wife's 2015 6C Polo 1.2TSI, it looks like you could even break some of the clips on the housing separating the top from the bottom even after getting it off the car and removing the screws!

I do work around a mining area on the outskirts. While the dust levels aren't excessive, it's certainly more dust than the suburb in which I live in.
Unfortunately this was the first time I opened up the filter box due to my reluctance of opening the overly-complex air box.

Its really annoying. Removing an air filter should be a simple task that should less than 2 minutes. VW should learn from Kia in terms of simplicity. I was able to open and inspect a Kia Rio's air box within a fraction of the time.

Designed to protect dealership revenue streams. The Germans aren't the worst for this - I had a Peugeot 205 GT that needed half the ancillaries out to change the spark plugs.

This is what my filter looks like after 18.000 km
Just changed it today and replaced it with a Pipercross.

Yes. A GTi.
The filter is about half the thickness of the original.
The only impression I have it's that there is more induction noise even at idle.
At a price of about 25 EUR it's not much more than the original standard filter.
Any performance gains or losses if any, I believe are negligible.

These filters are supposed to be washable and reusable aren't they?
I'd agree that power/mpg gains are going to be negligible - petrol engines meter their airflow for stoichiometric ratio with fuel, there's no gains for trying to throw more air in (the car will compensate to prevent an excess), and the standard filter is supposed to be more than adequate to allow enough air through for its expected lifespan.
My car is due its second service in August (currently at 13600 miles (about 22500km). I'm presuming that the stock air filter is due a replacement then (but maybe not).
Half tempted to get a panel filter myself if it sounds better, but I think that may just be the lockdown making me want to shop!

Yes, it's washable. It came in the box oiled and ready to fit.
Do I like the induction noise? At full throttle it's ok. I wouldn't write a song about it though
However, at idle it's just a bit noisy. You can hear the air being sucked in, especially just after start-up when the choke is on.
After a minute, when the revs come down, it becomes almost normal.
