Quirks & Features

Just like Doug DeMuro does in his YouTube videos, anybody noticed any interesting quirks or features with their Polo? I'm still trying to understand why the front fog light indicator switch lights up when I turn on the front fog lights (and there is no indicator on the AID). But when I turn on the rear fogs, the indicator lamp doesn't illuminate but rather I get a fog light symbol on the AID.

When both fog lights are on, you can see the front lamp illuminated by the switch, but the rear lamp isn't illuminated

With adaptive cruise control on, if you encounter slower moving traffic in the outside lane, it won't undertake and will slow down the car to match the speed of the car in the other lane. But if you want to violate this rule, you can click the RES button and it will undertake.

Also, in relation to adaptive cruise control (or standard perhaps), - and + will decrease or increment the desired speed in 10km/h increments respectively. Probably lesser known is that, pressing SET or RES will decrease or increase by 1km/h increments respectively.

In the UK, I think it might be a legal requirement to have a warning in the AID / instrument display when the rear fog light’s on to remind you to turn it off when it’s not needed, as it can be really annoying for drivers who are following you. Additionally, as well as being annoying, that intense bright red light is really painful on my the eyes for following drivers - and we’ve probably all sat behind someone using rear fog lights unnecessarily so will know what it’s like. Improper and unnecessary use of rear fog lights is one of my motoring pet hates 😖.

I don’t think there’s the same legal requirement to have a warning light on the instrument display when the front foglights are being used.

One that i discovered recently is that if you reverse while your wipers are on, your rear wiper will activate automatically.

If your driver door is open, your car is off and your lights are on the standard beam, you can move the indicator stalk to either side to switch on the front and rear parking lights for the corresponding side.

And you can disable that feature on the infotainment

I see the windscreen 'Wiper service position' is mentioned in one of these videos, and it reminded me of how pleased I was to find out this wasn't necessary on the AW :D

Can you still lift the wiper arms completely away from the windscreen without risking damage to the edge of the bonnet if you don’t use the service position? - e.g. when washing and drying the windscreen and scuttle panel and when changing wiper blades?

Yes, no need for the 'Service Position', just lift the wiper arms up whenever you feel like it without worrying about them catching the bonnet, I was really happy with VW for doing it this way.

Just picked mine up and it’s the same. So don’t think you’ve got an issue there!

That's because the steering wheel, DSG gear lever and jacara cloth are shared with the Golf GTI. VW couldn't be bothered to make a handbrake variant with red stitching for the Polo and Up! GTI (Golf GTI comes with electronic handbrake switch).
