New Match 95 PS acquired (eventually)

I've been dithering over swapping my old car for months but of course the Covid lockdown made that tricky so had to wait until the dealers opened again. Spent the time on Youtube, and eventually decided on either a Polo 95 or a H*und*i i20 or maybe a Toyota something.
Wanted a supermini sized car, as parking spaces seem to be getting smaller. Also P/X car was a diesel, now verboten (or nearly) in Bristol and Westminster.
When the Hyundy dealers finally opened again they were swamped with demand, and there were no i20's in the local showroom.
I've owned two Golfs previous so figured a Polo was a safe bet without a test drive, barged into the VW dealer without an appointment and demanded they sold me a car. They had two Match 95's on short order, so plumped for a Limestone grey. Should be here next week.
What they didn't have was anything with the 115 PS engine, so 95 Pferdestärke will have to do.
Saleman said they were inundated with new car orders on all models, so was quite lucky not to have to wait for the factory. Also there was quite a lot of pressure to take a PCP plus GAP insurance and the Lifeshine malarky for £400. Took several 'no thanks' to get past those.
Dealer suprised I wanted to pay cash! Kept pointing out the £2000 deposit contribution for PCP. I pointed out that a PCP cost me £1000 in interest and limited me to 10,000 miles a year, whereas cash didn't, which was politely ignored.
Settled on a service pack to shut him up but not quite sure what I've bought for £10 a month.
Didn't get any discount on the Polo but we haggled over the P/X price of my old car and got within £300 of the VW online trade-in price, which was fine.(Toyota offered £800 more online but couldn't get a prompt appointment at the local dealer. Hyundai were £500 less than VW but didn't have any cars.)
So, the long wait drags on. Looking forwards to the new car.
One question: Phone holders. What do you use and where do you stick it? I like to keep them off the windscreen if possible. Phone is an el cheaps Moto G7.
Danke sehr.

No discount? The dealer must be laughing all the way to the bank.
You should've taken up the PCP to bag the £2k deposit contribution and then withdrawn from the finance agreement within the cooling off period to retain the £2k and pay pennies in interest for the few days you would've had the agreement (about £2.50 a day). You have 30 days to pay the balance in full once you've withdrawn e.g. you have an "£18k RRP car with £2k deposit contribution, VWFS will chase you to settle with £16k. They can't claw back the deposit contriburion.
Between that deposit contribution and other discounts, I'd have been aiming for about £3200 total discount.
Anyway, if you haven't received the car yet, I'd be getting that PCP agreement put in place to grab that £2k. Don't tell your salespwrson you plan to withdraw.

The salesperson was actually quite pushy over the PCP and suggested taking out the PCP and then withdrawing.
There's talk on the Lexus forum of withdrawing from a PCP within 14 days and then being charged the £2000 contribution/discount. So readers should check/verify first in case the PCP agreements are different or have changed. I don't know what the current PCP agreemeent with VW finance is.

Well I'd be doing that. It's a free £2000 discount just waiting to be claimed. Dealers aren't usually keen on you taking out to withdraw later because they're hoping to get a slice of commission out of it. If the deal hinges on it, they'd rather have the car sale and no VWFS commission than no car sale.
Our 2019 Polo GTI+ and 2019 Audi A4 Avant are bought outright. At the time, the GTI+ had no incentives on it, but the Audi (nearly new) comes with a free service pack if you PCP,, so I took the PCP, withdrew 3 days later (incurring £8.82 interest) and paid off the finance and retain the service pack.
Do the finance and claim that £2k, then withdraw, you'd be daft not to.

Got my 115 SEL a week or two before lockdown cash deal £2160 discount. In stock car with winter pack and style pack in deep black pearl. Got a deal for 200 quid for mudflaps all round 2 year service plan and supaguard protection ( which having read up on the reviews was sceptical about but they have made a very decent job of it).
Must say I got a few quotes from Carwow and went in armed with all the info and salesman beat them on cash sale with the additions.
Phone holders...I got a magnetic holder from Tesco which goes into the air vent supplied with a sticky metal pad which you stick to back of phone and then onto the holder. Works extremely well!!

^ You might've got £2160.discount on your car, but you'd have got that AND the deposit contribution if you'd taken out the finance for a few days. The £2160 was out of the dealers pocket, the deposit contribution is from a completely different source (VWFS), so you can get both.
The dealer might try and make out you get less discount off them if you get the deposit contribution, but that doesn't have to be the case.
If there's a deposit contribution, free services etc on offer for taking out finance, take the finance to get it and withdraw within 14 days and pay off the balance.

Legally they can't grab it back. I've seen people receiving (about 5 years ago) letters from dealerships that sounded official and legally binding, threatening legal action to get it back, insisting that the car buyer send them a cheque. Those letters were responded to, pointing out that their agreement was with the finance provider and not the dealership.
Consumer laws exist to protect the consumer from being enticed into finance that they may not need - these laws state that a car bought under finance cannot be sold cheaper than a one bought cash. The workaround to marginally stay on the right side of these laws is to offer "deposit contributions" that cannot be recovered if you choose to withdraw in the 14 day cooling off period for your finance.
I've done it twice with Audi (they use VWFS).

Yes I know all that but the hassle what with lockdown approaching etc etc would not imho been worth it and as no one new how long dealerships etc would be closed quite a stressful situation on top of the corona virus stress as well. I am sure most people on here would be happy to beat online quotes and get immediate delivery rather than have to wait goodness knows how long to get their new car!!!

^ it takes minutes to be approved by VWFS (unless the applicant's credit rating is very poor) and take the finance. No hassle or waiting at all. Day after delivery you call VWFS or send them a letter stating that you wish to withdraw, they send a letter out to tell you what you owe. You send a BACS payment to cover the settlement amount and done.
Easiest and quickest £1000/1250/1500/2000 you'll ever save.

Thanks for that, will head off to Tescos ASAP. Never mind saving £2K, its the £9.95 phoneholder that's bugging me.
Had to go to the local village in my 'big' car today. Parking spaces full of bloddy Polo's. How dare they! Actually looking forwards to downsizing as town parking spaces seem to be shrinking.
Its going to be a long 'two weeks' wait.

Brilliant! The savings just keep on coming...
I got some Scotchguard from Amazon when it was £6 for two cans so that will do the seats.
Dealer confirmed car comes with a spare wheel, so I hope he's right and there won't be an ugly scene/arm-waving/shouting when I go to collect it.
Unfortunately the P/X car has 50 litres of Shell V-power diesel in it. I really hate giving that away.

Advice worth taking - a simple admin process and cash in your hand using a legal loophole. Would definitely go down that route if buying new.

Worth trying for - dealer discount and deposit contribution discount, plus push for a service pack which saves money over 2 years, that's a decent discount package all round. Would ignore all the other dealer add on stuff.
