Do I need to code a second hand airbag module

I have an old 1998 Polo engine AEE. The air bag warning light came on and VCDS stated a fault code 65535. Looking up the fault guide in Elsawin, it suggests that the module needs to be replaced. I hope to use a second hand module. I have removed the module from under the central air vents, (what a pain) and note the part number 1J0 909 603. There is no index number stated which most second hand units tend to state.
My question is, can I use a second hand module. Does the index number matter as I dont have one marked on my module. Finally does the second hand module have to be coded by VCDS and is it easy to do.
If I cant fix this then the car will be going to the scrap yard next year when the MOT runs out.
