Hi,

Drive is the default mode. When the car is restarted regardless of the mode you selected it will always go to D the default mode.

Can it be like this?
if im in eco mode the gear selector still stands on eco when i restart but it does not cut the power or the free wheel function.

Meanning. it still shifts really late and at a lower rpm

This is by design and I guess a safety feature as the coasting feature of ECO mode could surprise someone who is not expecting it. It also wouldn't be a great mode to use in snow as it disengages drive to the wheels so I guess that's why you have to actively select it each time you turn on the car as driving conditions could have changed since the last time they car was driven. I have also seen on another forum someone suggesting it's to save the clutches from wear.

I'm a bit lost here.
I pretty exclusively use ECO mode and it stays in ECO mode all the time, I don't have to re-select it every time I start the car. :?:

It stays in ECO mode but the coasting feature (where the engine idles when you lift off the throttle) only works if you select ECO mode after you start the engine. If ECO mode is selected when you start the car, the coasting feature isn't enabled.

Now that's really interesting, as I noticed the ECO mode seemed to have become very jerky on the downchanges lately.
I thought I was imagining it, evidently not!
Cheers for the tip, I want it back to freewheeling mode so I guess I'll just have to quickly unselect and select every journey.

You dont need to reselect just press eco mode again.. no need too go into normal and then back to eco.

i had a beetle dune cab before this one and on that one the car stayed in idle mode untill i selected to change it.

So if ECO mode is already lit, just press it once again?
Presumably no visible change will show anywhere?
I'll give that a whirl at lunchtime, cheers

Confirmed one press of the already lit ECO button.
It went off briefly and came back on with a dash message saying ECO DRIVE ACTIVATED (or similar).
God knows what driving mode I've been driving around in for weeks, thinking I was in ECO mode....presume 'normal'?
Much nicer and smoother now.
What a weird, weird thing for VW to do.....
if it's lit, it's perfectly reasonable for owners to assume that's what they getting.
Where's my litigation letter for all the fuel I need to reclaim....

Well in my experience you ar still in sort of eco. the gears change up much faster and keep´s it in a higher gear longer. the performance is not all 200Hp in my opinion. sort of eco light maybe?

Yeh from what I can make out, it's still in ECO mode albeit just without the coasting/freewheeling feature active. Tbh I find it much smoother without that feature activated, surprised you find the opposite.

How can the car changing down gears be smoother than freewheeling...?

So you think the different modes mean different levels of power...?
I doubt that very much and can't see any evidence of it.
If I floor it, it's the same speed in any mode.
