GTi Oil filter housing question

Just a quick question
Should the filter housing for the GTi have a plastic rod that goes through the filter into the filter housing? If so what does it do?
I've seen it on videos for other cars that use the 2.0L EA888 like the golf GTi/R but it just occurred to me that I don't remember seeing it when I changed the oil and filter on mine.
