Hi,

I’ve just bought my 2018 polo and I love almost everything about it. The constant rain today combined with a 70 mile journey revealed that almost every back and forth of the windscreen wipers results in a noticeable clicking/tapping noise on the driver side as the wiper reaches the vertical. It doesn’t happen with the other wiper and it’s about 4 in every 5 swipes.

Can you please let me know what you think might be causing this? I have looked at the blade and there are no obstructions or obvious damage. The noise appears to happen at the precise moment the wiper changes direction. Any help is greatly appreciated

This is very common with Volkswagen wipers, mine used to do it and a courtesy car I had did it too a 21 reg Golf. I found out it to be the wiper blade material off the OEM Bosch Aerotwins was too stiff on the screen which caused juddering. Thank you very much, you have been incredibly helpful. May I please ask if you were easily able to swap the blades yourself? I’m getting more and more grown up but don’t want to bite off more than I can chew.

Yes it’s very easy. The wipers simply pop off from the wiper arm when you press in a small button and pull it. The new wipers come with a variety of holders and one of those will fit the polo. You’ll figure it out when you see the part and take off the current wiper.

Do not allow the wiper arm's metalwork to smack own onto the windscreen, allowing that to happen might just crack the glass, so take precautions to protect the wiper arm while changing the wiper.

I changed them recently on a 2005 Polo and it wasn't quite as easy as just pressing the release button, I had to press the release button then pull the wipers a few MM to keep the button depressed and then press in two plastic "latching" pieces and then pull off the wiper, may be easier on > 2018 models.

@Chrisash; as others have said, it’s really easy to change the wiper blades. The YouTube video at the link below shows the wiper blades being changed on a mk7 Golf GTI. The process is exactly the same for the Polo. Although it’s possible to pull the wiper arms away from the screen on the AW model Polo without putting them into the service position (vertical on the screen), IMHO it’s easier to change the blades with the wipers in the service position than in the normal parked position.

Good advice by @RUM4MO about taking care to not let the wiper arm fall down onto the screen once you’ve removed the old blade - the guy in the YouTube video lays a bunched up towel on the screen to minimise the risk of screen damage if the arm does fall onto the glass (I use a couple of folded car drying towels to give plenty of layers of protection).
