2002 Polo S 1.4 BBY Auto - unable to select Park

Auto shifter will not go to the Park position. Shifter also a bit reluctant to go in R. Have left it parked in N. Able to select D and other gears OK. Vehicle driving OK otherwise (apart from age-related issues). Any ideas please?

Just to follow up on this the shift level can be pulled up and off after firstly rotating the chrome trim below 90 degrees. I also removed the trim panel and found everything to be intact. What I noticed then was that I could press the shift lock button down by hand and the selector leaver worked just fine. Suspect an issue with the shift lever itself (chrome button). I sprayed in some release oil and manipulated it! Replaced and all seems well for now. If problem recurs will try to find out of disassembly might be possible, else find another one.
