Knocking when turning left or right

When driving straight and then quickly turning either left or right slightly, there’s a knocking sound and feel through the streering wheel. It only occurs if the wheels change direction, at any angle. It is most noticeable when driving straight and turning left or right slightly. What could this most likely be?

When my old vehicle did this it was the CV joint boots.
Did it start on one side only or has it always been both from the get go?
What year is your car? How many miles covered?

I had the CV boot replaced on the passenger side due to a tear and water ingress, even after the New boot the car still groans when turning left and right while accelerating. That is a separate issue I’m going to get the garage to look into. I think the sounds I’m hearing now could be the tie rod end ball joint wearing out? Did you replace your CV joint after the boot replacement? The car has done 56,000 miles. I can’t figure out what side it is coming from because it is very faint but is felt through the steering wheel.

I got rid of the car before getting anything replaced. Not specifically due to the problem but simply because I was moving overseas and didn’t need it.
Had I kept it though I was advised the boot and join needed doing as the boot breaking had allowed the join to experience excessive wear.

Got it seen to today at Romford Volkswagen and they have confirmed that it is due to the shock absorber. Not sure which side but I presume it is the left one. They will be replacing it free of charge as luckily I purchased an extra 2 years full warranty.
