Location of paint code label.

Post by Allegedly »

Hi all,

Rob here, still a newbie.
I've just bought a 2004 1.4 TDI Sport.
I've read a lot of posts and bit on the t'interweb about where the paint code can be found.
As yet, I've had no luck.
I've looked under the bonnet around engine bay and if it's there, it's not obvious.
I've looked in the boot area, under the carpets and didn't notice a label there either.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Not sure where to look next.
Door jambs? Edge of door?
Is there a way to trace colour code from vehicle vin?
Appreciate any guidance in this,
Cheers
Rob

Vw’s come with two stickers from factory, one goes in the boot floor area , the other goes in the front of the service book.
Look there first, the vin plate will not give paint code.

Hi guys,
Thanks for the replies and info.
Bloody typical...car didn't come with a handbook..so that rules that route out.
littlepolo....a sort of metallic blue colour. Not dark or light...sort of midrange blue!
Carbonchaos...had a quick look under the carpet in the boot area, nothing. Is it likely to be under the spare wheel?
Asking the last as it's pishing down up here and if it's unlikely, it'll save me getting soaked!
Cheers
Rob

Edit: Stopped raining, briefly, so checked under the spare wheel. Nothing.
So, at the moment, I've no idea what colour the car is.
The wheel centre's are rarer than rocking horse teeth it would appear...circular push-in's with 10 holes around rim so think it's refurb job. Found rounded 'stick on' VW logos. Refurb wheels and spray centres at the same time.

Not sure if this is any use but here the little beast is.
I've looked at available paints for Polo's of that period, on-line and still not sure. My pics are either flash or a bit vague.

You should be able to narrow down your code here as there are only a few blues per model year:

BTW, my Polo's paint code is LA5F is summer blue and I purchased paint from 'Huddersfield Paint's (autopaint_hudds) off the 'bay and I'm happy with the colour match (allowing for a bit of age fade) and results (always after a lot of prep, of course).

Hi guys,
Thanks for all the replies, good info, clearly some knowledgeable people on here. Good site.
After faffin about for a bit, I just rang VW in Inverness, got through to the parts dept and a good bloke took my cars reg and read me back the paint code. Simple as that.
I asked him if he kept rattle cans of it in stock, no but could be ordered. However, they're 150ml plus 150ml lacquer.
A couple of companies in the Highlands do them or mix them for you, including Dingbro the parts deliverers.
But you have to go through a local car parts biz to use them so rang our local one, B+H car parts.
Turns out they mix there too. 18 quid for 300ml mixed but.....they had two cans on the 'shelf', code HBLUM02 which equates to A5M for VW.
7 quid a can! So, result.
Two cans now and just need a couple of days of good weather or.....my boss hinted I could use the front entrance of our warehouse and get it our of the rain.
Couple of other little odd things to do. One I may post pics of, refurb of the push in wheel centres.
Regards
Rob

Ah, I though it was Mercato Blue (the options are few) but didn't want to mislead. To avoid rework, when painting ensure that the humidity is low and temps within range of the paint. Also take note about application times between coats and especially between the base and clearcoat.
