2012 6R Polo Headlight Question

I have a 2012 6R polo entry level trim level. What I find quite strange is that my headlight control switch has the standard positions: 0 = OFF, Then Parking Lights, then Low Beams as pictured below:
The car does not appear to have any automatic lights. If it did, if i'm not mistaken it will have an Auto position on the switch. So the strange thing is that with my switch left on the 0 (OFF) position, at night the low beams turn on by themselves. How is this possible? I just cannot seem to turn off the main low beams at night. I can't remember if it was always like this but one side bulb is blown so need to replace that. But could a blown bulb on one side cause this? but then how does the car know it's dark if it doesn't have automatic lights?
