car won't go into any gear

Hi all,

i thought i was registered here as ive been on here quite a few times but turns out im not when i tried to recover my details.

Anyway the wife's polo GTi on the way home from work yesterday it was all normal then as she got closer to home the car wouldn't go into second gear she managed to get home in first gear as she wasn't far away. i jumped in it and with the car running or completely off you can select any gear and it doest engage the car will just roll back you can even try to put the car in gear with the engine running without using the clutch the gear stick will go into any gear but isn't engaged.

it doesnt seem like its lost any fluid. when pushing down on the clutch sometimes it sticks and you have to pull it up and if you pump it a few times it goes really stiff so you can't press it down very far (like if you'd pump the break)

i have searched on here but haven't seen anything similar and was wondering if anyone has come across this before?

Im waiting for a friend to come out to have a look

Most likely it’s a failed clutch or clutch slave cylinder ? But do update the forum with the cause of the problems

Thanks gents, any idea what sort of price these will cost?
She has a service plan and the car is due a service so was wondering if to just send it to the dealer or am independent vw specialist.

Speaking of which can anyone recommend a vw specialist around the aldershot, guildford. Farnborough area

So had a friend come round today (ex vw guy) he seems to think it’s the slave cylinder which is housed within the bell housing so it’s all got to come apart, not something that will be done on the drive but he hopes to get it done next week if the parts are readily available. I will update once it’s been done

sounds like he has it sussed, check the master as well while its out and maybe if your keeping the car the thrust bearing may save
on a future bell housing removal. good luck.

he did say its probably worthwhile changing the clutch whilst its all out but that's entirely up to me. so we are going to get that done at the same time

Doing all that makes so much sense, then hopefully this area of the car never needs revisiting while you own it.

Got the car back today all fixed, he called me once he had it all apart to say he couldn’t see anything wrong. We decided to go ahead and change the clutch slave cylinder and he said may as well change the clutch regulating valve. All done £725 all in
