Given the lack of replies, I'll take it slowly with posting the mods.

For the people with MQB kessy, perhaps a nice trick...
ENG129021-ENG155268-internal_passive_entry_exit_byte2-lf_shutdown_gotrigger
When set to 'activated', it will allow you to lock the car by keyfob, and then the only way to unlock it is by keyfob again. Not by kessy.
I had it activated since I like the idea of passive entry (kessy) being disabled when locking via keyfob. But it also disables the easy open function of the boot, so I decided to set it to 'not activated' again.

You can still disable kessy for one cycle by pressing lock on the fob, and touching the door handle sensor for 'lock'.

This feature has an important implication as well. It adds another layer of safety by disabling kessy temporarily, and preventing car theft. I liked this feature very much and use it when I feel I have parked my car at unsafe places. :)

Owner's manual explains it's operation in detail:

Hi all, I'd like you to meet Fritz, Fritz the fridge. Anyone who knows me, knows I'm a big fan of stupid lame jokes and puns and this is one of the better ones.
I had my fridge for two months now and I like it a lot, performance is in fact pretty good! viewtopic.php?p=596306#p596306

First of all, I think it's hilarious to have a German fridge in a German car called Fritz. But there is a reason for its nametag.

You see, Fritz lives on the back seat of my Passat, in the middle. So it doesn't occupy any heated seats. And it wears a seat belt, of course. But in that, a problem occurs. The seat belt sits very low. In case of a crash, Fritz freeze will turn into Blitzkrieg when the fridge will just roll towards the front of the car.

On Aliexpress I could order these seat belt covers that will hold it in place, and I had the opportunity to have a free print on it. So I took my chance and immortalize Fritz. Very happy with the result and improved safety.

So, allow me to do share a nice retrofit, the 360 Area View / Overhead View camera.
My Passat was born with the RVC compact, a nice rear view camera with guidelines that move along with steering angle.
A very pleasant system and works well with the PLA, 360 degrees of (partially virtual) PDC

Code: Select all

Address 6C: Back-up Cam. (J772) Labels:| 5Q0-980-556.clb
   Part No SW: 5Q0 980 556 B HW: 5Q0 980 556 B
   Component: RVC Compact H12 0231
   Coding: 0184020163002017000040
   Shop #: WSC 05311 115 00065
   ASAM Dataset: EV_CamSysRVRVCPANAMQBAB 006009
   ROD: EV_CamSysRVRVCPANAMQBAB_006_VW37.rod
   VCID: 392FD0A549DB7703E0D-806C

No fault code found.
The top level equipment would be the 360 degree camera system, four camera's in the car, linked to a module, and the image integrated to one feed.

Of course this can be retrofitted and I'm certainly not the first one to do it. But I did it anyway. And I decided to do it the nicest way I could imagine, with some small deviations from full OEM.

First of all, parts list:

- 1x Camera module 5Q0 907 556x
- 4x camera 5Q0980546A
- 2x bracket for mirror camera's 3G0857689
- 1x foam for below right seat 3G0907285, to mount the module
- 1x 3G0927132J (or without PLA another module) buttons in dash
- Wiring looms for module and video feed cables to all four camera's
- 2x 8R0972702 and 2x 8R0972701 connectors for door wiring loom in A pillar

I decided not to go with the foam, but to use a Dynaudio bracket and modify it to fit below the passenger seat:
- 1x 3Q0863051
- 1x 3Q0907390
- 2x N91158501

Image

Image

And of course some way to mount the front camera, I took a facelift logo, a grinder and some adhesive to make it work with pre-facelift grille: 3G7853600

Image

The bottom side of the mirror is not a separate part, so I bought these on aliexpress: https://nl.aliexpress.com/item/1005004292776270.html
These came with two brackets to hold the camera's. Quality is very good. Alternatively I could have gotten a used mirror, but I decided to keep my current mirrors and modify them.

Image

The steps I took were in this order:
- First, construct the bracket for the module below the driver seat and install the module there. This will be the reference point for wire length etc.
- Lead all camera wires to the front camera and the door pillar connectors. I used the rubber grommet that usually holds the clutch pedal as a feed-through for the front video cable
- Glue in the front logo to the pre-facelift grill. I had to cut off all the tabs from the new front logo and grid it flat.
- I also had to modify the camera connector for the front camera, so it wouldn't interfere with the ACC radar. I basically cut it down to just the front section.
- Remove the door panel and lead the cable to the A pillar connector. I opted not to change the 27-pin connectors to 8R0972702/701 but use MCON in the four available holes
- Remove the exterior mirror and strip it down fully to replace the bottom end. This took a lot of time. I used this opportunity to also install the dimming passenger mirror glass.
- To connect the module to the car, I took the original +30 cable in the right hand side sill and spliced into it. There, the wire to the RVC compact is already present.
- Canbus was taken from the same wiring loom in the sill, the canbus network for the sensors is present to the DCC module in right rear boot.
- I ran an extra wire from the module to the tailgate connector, along with the video cable. This extra cable opens the logo.
- It's not necessary to replace the entire rear emblem. It can be taken apart so you only need to change the camera itself.
- Connect new video feed cable from the RVC module to the MIB control unit in the glove box

Wiring was all connected in accordance with the wiring diagram found in the imgur link at the bottom. Since I have a PDC module, there are no wires to the center switch module in the dash. For now, all the hardware work is done.

The software part was tricky as well. My module 5Q0 907 566 C was from an Arteon so it didn't have the correct Passat B8 Variant dataset.
Luckily, Slavik solved this for me with this magic VCP device and wrote the correct parameters to my C module.

Now the only issue left is calibration, which is difficult as well, at first glance. It cannot be done with VCDS, it must be done with ODIS Service.
Calibration must be done with a VAS 721 001 board. I bought a board on Aliexpress, which is a bit smaller than it should be (70cm wide instead of the VW prescribed 80cm).
ODIS has a guided function for the calibration and this was easy to do, the entire calibration took only 15 seconds. The hardest part is to align the boards correctly.

Image

My first attempts to calibration all failed, I'm unsure why. Perhaps reflections or lighting conditions, perhaps bad luck, perhaps a not perfect surface.
But eventually I succeeded and the system is working like a charm.

Black and white combination :)

Your Bi projector led headlights have dynamic AFS?

For that 360 camera, need PLA 3.0 right. And also need new PDC button with camera logo or stock PDC button also does the job?

Yes, my LED headlights indeed have dynamic cornering lights and DLA too.

I don't think 360 camera needs PLA, regular PDC is also available (at least as a button module) and the wiring diagram even provides a case for cars without PDC module.

I had some fun over the weekend, I changed my OEM intercooler to a Wagner Competition intercooler, to improve performance. It was a nice job...

Remove:
- Wheels
- Wheel housings
- Grill
- Headlights
- Bottom protection plate
- Front bumper
- Front impact beam
- Disconnect all connectors to the front..

Then undo the cooling package. The AC condensor, intercooler and coolant radiator are one assembly, and the intercooler is sandwiched in the middle...

Image

The size difference is mainly in the thickness of the intercooler, the length and width are almost identical.

Image

Mine is OEM R, so you can see the change in volume and size here: https://mygolfmk7.com/mk7-gti-r-intercooler-comparison/

Since I'm a data analyst by education, I gathered some data, comparing the OEM R intercooler with the upgraded Wagner.
What you'd like to see is a small deltaT (difference between ambient and intake air temperature). Especially when power demand is high.

OEM:
Image

Upgrade:
Image

What you can see here is, when you're at low speed, the OEM intercooler is as good as the Wagner. Probably heat transfer between radiator and intercooler is increased since the intercooler is simply larger and adsorbs the heat.

But when you're at power, the uprated intercooler really shows its value and pushes down the intake temperatures a lot.

Furthermore, you want the intercooler to be less restrictive, since all drag and resistance in the intercooler is putting additional work on the turbocharger. An interesting link: https://mygolfmk7.com/mk7-gti-intercooler-test/

Image

The Wagner intercooler is performing well, perhaps the Integrated Engineering and the do88 would be good or better candidates as well.
Estimated power increase is about 8bhp in comparison to the stock intercooler: https://mygolfmk7.com/2022/07/golf-r-ic-street-data/

That's lot of work for just 8hp blip
I guess there is more to it than just hp. Those charts, graphs went way over my head.. good for me

Yes, you're absolutely right. This is a lot of work for just 8 bhp.
But it's more than that, fortunately.

The range at which it will have maximum power will be a bit broader, so in high summer you'll still have plenty of power.
From factory, the OEM intercooler doesn't have a lot of headroom. According to the PL24 catalogue, my Passat had the 'GTI' intercooler from the CHH engine.
It turned out that my Passat indeed had the R intercooler that belongs to the CJX engine. So that was beneficial.

Furthermore the tuning potential will be a bit higher, and under extreme circumstances (high power over an extended period), the car will be a bit cooler.
I'm not planning on turning this car into a racecar. But towing a caravan for prolonged periods of time in mid summer through France is something that it should comfortably be capable of at 180km/h.

And having 450 bhp at your disposal is also nice, of course.

iichel,

quite a lot of time and efforts to do this intercooler.
+ 1 to Patil -- hardly could understand graphs except a familiar name like Golf R :D
New Logos are on either side - door and fender -- they were in previous pictures too? Or I am missing something?

Hi Amit,

it's allright, the graphs with the intercooler are just my inner nerd. I think I didn't explain it clear enough, but doesn't matter.
The main message is, cooling is improved whist driving, that's a good thing.

The old logo's were indeed there:

I like the newer design better. :D
