Air Recirc Question

My son has a 2015 Seat Ibiza, I have been told they are very similar to the Polo.

Anyway there is a knocking from behind the passenger dash when turning the engine on or entering reverse. Lasts for about 10 seconds. I believe its the air recirculation motor.

The local garage wants nearly £300 to replace it plus a £80 inspection fee as they won't change it before doing that and quite frankly its a lot more than he has right now.

So he could put up with the sound but has a test in his car soon. Advanced driving not a driving test and it's not going to sound too good having that knocking away when selecting reverse or whatever.

Does anyone know if its possible to just disconnect the air recirculation motor? Would it cause any lights to come on the dash or cause any issues with the normal operation of the fan system or air con? I would assume and hope that all the air recirculation motor does it stop air recirculation from working but I don't know that for sure hence the question.
