Hello.

Seem to have a very intermittent noise that sounds like a little stone hitting metal.

There are no issues with the car from what I can tell.

The noise happens when just prior to coming to a complete stop / sometimes very slow turning.

It will happen once then vanish until you have been going for a while then pot luck if it happens again the next time you stop.

Probably impossible to diagnose / know what it is but maybe someone has had similar?

Possibly small stone/gravel trapped between the brake disc and the splash plate at the back of the disc. Had this sort of noise many times over the years on various cars (very rural / dirty roads rounds here).
If you can identify where it is coming from (IE. near side front etc). Then try taking that wheel off and you might find something just drops out. If not, use a bright LED torch and check between the brake disc and splash plate.

Splash plate, that the bit that runs around the edge of the disc at the back, just in front of suspension etc.

Sounds like a possibility for sure.

I’m betting on the brakes, I’ve had similar noises where the brake pads are slightly loose inside the holders so when you come to a stop the brakes will be locked into the wheels and clunk as the car rolls in the opposite direction to the braking direction. But since you mentioned it happens when just about to come to a stop it might not be the pads and indeed the splash plate the others have referred to.

I discounted the brakes as i am aware of the noise they make in regard the pads moving. Thats more of a dull thud than the stone hitting metal noise im getting.

100 mile trip. Car flawless. Slowly park up and the little ting noise still there, hmmm. Will just have to wait until next service and it’s in the air.

I know that it's sometimes not easy to tell where a noise originates.

But can you tell approx where it's coming from?
Front of the car I'm assuming here. Is it obviously one side or the other? Or does it sound more like its in the engine bay somewhere.

Does appear to be toward the front, underneath, but no indication of which side could even be central.

Will have to get a second person or something.

Noise still present, seems to have no relation to brakes as can happen when turning slowly sometimes too, its subtle.

The slowly rolling to a stop scenario still sometimes produces the noise too.

Is your Polo a DSG automatic? Mine makes a metallic clunk sound when coming to a stop and it’s the mechatronic unit disgusting 2nd gear to 1st gear and then engaging neutral when just about coming to a stop. It could simply be the sound of the gearbox operating.

Dsg auto yes.

More of a ting than a clunk for me

Sometimes get a couple of noises in quick succesion tho.

It sounds like the sound of synchromesh linking which better describes the sound, I will make a video of the sound and provide a link to it and if it is the same sound then I wouldn’t worry as if mine does it and yours too then it must be normal. I’ll post the sound later today.

Okay yeah that sounds good! I could never get a clip of mine as id have to get somebody very patient in a car park to stand there and try and catch the noise if it happened for like 10 minutes

I thought my car did make the noise mentioned so couldn’t do the video. I think unless you can get a video of the issue it would be hard for the VW garage to fix it.

Could you not capture the noise on your car on video then?
