6r tyres on 9n3 steels?!

Post by Mindthepolo »

Hi all,

I just got some winter tyres for my polo 9n3, as they were a good price , on steels ready to go and nearby - thought I'd store em until next winter.

I checked pcd/ offset and VW part ref, and all that, it matched, but once I got back, I noticed my summer tyres are 165 70 14 standard size, and the winter Goodyear tyres are175 70 14, which look to me to be from 6r.. doh!

They got about a winter season life left in them, have I made a boob here or can I run them with no issues?

Standaard (the ones you have now)
Nieuwe (the ones you want to fit)

So according to this, your actual speed with the new tyres is higher than with the standard tyres
This is in kilometers per hour not in miles per hour

On standard tyres, car speedos over-read by up to 5%.

So fitting slightly bigger outside diameter tyres such as 175/70R14 instead of 165/70R14 will make the speedometer more accurate, not less accurate.

Google maps has a GPS speedometer which shows the actual speed, so it's easy to use that to compare the car's speedometer reading with the actual speed.

Many cars will only be doing 47mph to 48mph when the speedometer is showing 50mph.

Car manufacturers are not allowed by law to sell a car with an under-reading speedometer. Hence, why car speedos usually over-read when on standard tyre sizes.
