Rear Wiper fault finding and location of relay? Polo 2010

Post by colin_thames »

Hi Folks, first posting so here goes. Wife's rear wiper packed up while iced up. Checked the fuse was okay so I assumed she'd burned out the motor. Changed the motor but still not working, so it must be the column switch or the relay.

Where is the relay and how to identify it please?
And how would I check the cause? Any thoughts?

Check the SB2 and SB41 fuses.

You star ciclo! Thanks. I’m struggling to spot whether there’s a relay for the rear wiper, but I’m viewing this on my phone while away on a break. Will be easier when I can look on my PC.
I see the diagram is for 2011 models. Do you think a 2010 model might be different?
Interesting there are two fuses. Thanks for that!

There is one fuse for the stalks and one for the wiper motor. There is no discrete relay. It's part of the bcm.

As you can see in the diagram, the J59 relay supplies power to several systems, that is, you can rule out relay failure if the fresh air blower switch works.
The J59 relay is in the same position for the 2010 models.

BCM = J519 Onboard supply control unit.

Hmm... here on the forum there have been reports of wiring damage right in the area of the corrugated tube where it joins the trunk lid.🤔

Thanks. Everything else seems to be working so probs not the relay. I had taken a look at the corrugated rubber gaiter at the boot lid opening. Pulled it back to check the cables inside. Couldn’t see any damage but to check it fully I’d have had to unwrap the insulation material covering the wiring.

The first thing appears to be SB41 fuse. Then, now I know the supply wire colours, perhaps I should check for continuity next.

Will report back if I discover the cause.

Thank you so much for your help. It turned out to be the SB41 fuse. Swapped another one in and Bob's your uncle!

Incidentally, the Polo shares it's rear wiper motor with the VW Touran. Part number 5K6 955 435 for anyone in a similar bind where the motor is knackered. I probably didn't need to swap it but it works perfectly.
