Head unit stopped working

I fitted a replacement single DIN head unit (JVC) a few years ago and it stopped working a few months back. I just got around to investigating and could not get it to power up. On removal, I found the heatsink at the rear was very hot, which is surprising since it was not switched on (or at least no signs it was powered up). After removing and disconnecting the unit obviously the temps dropped. Could an internal fault cause this? I'd like to make sure there is no vehicle wiring fault before fitting a new unit.
