Gearbox or handbrake problem?

Was driving today and after a few minutes I had a power loss when in 2nd gear. Would only go to 20mph. There was a message to release the handbrake but the break was off I believe and no handbrake warning light. Had to limp back home with hazards on. The took it out for a spin and all was fine… Anyone had this before? My son is due to do a driving test on Wed and now he’s rightly worried about the car…
