Anyone know if the 1.2TSI CBZB engine suffers from carbon buildup on the back of the valves?

Yup like all direct injection engine.

Type of driving, fuel quality and oil quality may the carbon buildup worst or not but It's something you have to deal with.

How involved is it to clean the carbon buildup, if possible at all for someone that works on their car with ‘home’ tools? It sounds like an interesting project to clean it.

I would go with the walnut blasting.
Might be trying that next year sometime when I have funds.
Struggling to find the walnut media.

The rest of those methods look like a messy event.

In one of my old/first jobs there was an ultrasonic machine that when immersing the parts in a highly toxic/harmful product/solvent gave an incredible result, the parts looked like new. In the hypothetical case that I had to do this cleaning job, I think I would remove the cylinder head and take it to a specialized workshop to have this cleaning work done.

oh definitely an ultrasonic parts cleaner would make this stuff like new.
Even the combustion chambers would get cleaned up. Just trying to peek down the spark plug holes recently looked real nasty.

But that is a heck of a task for just anyone to do. For just cleaning valves and intake the blast media seems best option to me.

It seems walnut blast media seems to take a little premium price here. Have to get it from jewellers or gun shops as tumble media.
But I've found another unlikely source: bird cage litter. 1/3 of the price for crushed walnut shells from the usual suspects.
