Hi, i am planing doing a engine swap for my 6n, i have asked in here before for some tips and i got some realy good ansvers. but there are still tons i dont know, so here are some more questions. I know werry little about engines and replacing them, but here are som things i thougt of.
1. will the engine fitt right in on the brackets that are holding the original engine inplace?
2. Do i need a new gearbox or will the old one work? what type?
3.What car should i get the stuff that holds the suspention and the breaks and weels from? golf ? modell?
4. VR6, GT60 or A3 1.8T what is the best for the polo. I am also thinking budget, dont want to use extreme amounts on this. My friends say i should go for the 1.8T. Will any 1.8t from audi fitt in the polo?
5. Where do i enquire a engine?
I hope someone can please enlighten me on some of these topics. thanx

Hi Cinder
Most countries won't allow an engine swap if the engine is replaced with an older model. That is, if the emission values are worse than you originally had they won't allow it. That's why you don't see many G60's in 6N's, even though these engines are relatively cheap.
The VR6 is unpopular, because of its size and weight. Even though the weight argument has been downplayed by owners of Mk4 VR6's, the general opinion is still that they're heavy, making the car nose-heavy, thus making the car handle like crap. The weight distribution of a mk4 is 65-35 as it is already, it only gets worse with a 6-pot lump.
The 1.8T has been done dozens of times now, as it is by far the most popular swap around. I know of two guys attempting this swap at the moment. Be prepared for a long, long process.
Now, to answer your questions:
1. No, it won't fit on the normal mounts. You'll need to adapt all three points, including the gearbox mount (towards the rear of the car), and the not-yet-there middle mount in the front.
2. Most people use the TT/Mk4 Golf gearbox that comes with the engine. I suppose you could use a different one, but why bother.
3. Brakes are usually G60 items, as they're still 4-stud. If you want 5 stud, try VR6 brakes, or even TT ones if you plan on running 16" wheels only. But, G60 brakes are fine, as they are the cost efficient option. The SEAT Ibiza Cupra had 4-lug Brembo brakes at one point, but they're obviously not cheap.
4. The 1.8T has tremendous tuning potential in a lightweight small package. Try getting an early one (pre-2002), with low miles. Make sure to get the dials, the keys, the computer, and all assorted bits attached to the engine as you'll spend ages gathering these afterwards.
5. A breaker's yard, or an engine specialist.
I haven't done this conversion myself, but this is all pretty reliable info.
Hope it helps

Speedlaws right, however get on to DSP tuning in France, they can supply all three engine mounts and and a custom exauhst as a package. this will save a lot of time.

Thanx alot for the answers! I am finished work now, and a freind and i are going to drive 1700km down norway now to pick up the polo n6 i bougt on the net today. I am realy exited about it.
The car dosent look like mutch but that dosent realy matter since we are going to pimp it up this winter
Here is a picture of the car, this picture is the pic from the carsales website so it is realy crappy.
the polo is a 1.3L with no lux, no power steering, electric windows of anything but that is ok, can add there itens later i guess. I got the car fairly cheep in norwegan standards i think i am going to pay 36.000.- NOK witch is about 4235EUR not sure what that is in £ but.
I have prolly loads more questions about the conversion, that i shall ask about later, and i will send more fotos when we start the prosess.
Have a nice weekend all of you!.

Congrats on the car!
I know Norway has mad car prices, so I guess it's not too bad a price to pay. It's a little more than we in Holland would pay, but not a huge difference.
Have fun modding it! You've got the right color already...

If you decide to fit the 1.8T give us a shout, mines not far off completion just need a few more bits. It's a pain in the arse but worth the hassle.

well the car in safe at home now! but the trip had its price.. We drove a subaru impreza down to pick it up, and about 560km on the way, we where pulled over by the cops also driving a impreza

OUCH! we had been clocked at 160kmh in the 50 sone, so my friend lost his driving license

and on the way home i got shoot in a speed camera about 50kmh over the speed limit.. so we are very sad about that. That again resulted in renting a limmo on saturday night, cruzing abound town drowning out pain in liters of Asti. So now we are also broke

..
Talked to a guy last night that is a owner of audi A4 stationwagen that has got a turbo and is tuned to level 2 with chip. preformance of that car is about 250hp. this car has a 1.8T in it, and the owner wants to sell the car. I was woundering is this a car i should by? does it have alot i can use from it. and what can i not use that i would have to get from other cars.
Wrighty: Have u used the DPS set? I sendt them a mail requesting price and what the set contains but no answer jet!

maby u know the price and what it comes with?
Thanx

You guys did 160 in a 50 zone? That's insane.
The Audi has a longtitudinal (or whatever) engine set-up, I believe, so it wouldn't do you any good (you need transverse).
You can get your 1.8 to 250 hp as well, with some effort.

On the continent, obviously. You know, the big chunk of land that consists of Germany, Holland, France, Belgium, etc. It's right across the channel, just go east.

Just because you haven't seen them, doesn't mean they aren't there. Have you ever visited a meeting or show in Europe? You should know better if you have.
Stop thinking you're God's gift to modified cars. You're not. You're not helping the topicstarter either.

Mine's nearly complete so there might be 2 in the UK soon (depending on the weather). however you have used the S3 engine and I've used the golf GTI engine.
