Gear selector problem???

Hi all,

I have a 2007 Polo that's started making an odd knocking noise. The actual gears and shafts seem fine - when in any gear, I can accelerate and use engine braking just fine. But it's when changing between gears there's a nasty knock that's recently started. It's most noticeable going into second gear. It kinda sounds like the gear change linkages are knocking about when changing between the gears instead of going in smoothly. Maybe the linkages have just worked loose? There was definitely a sudden start to the sound though - perhaps a bush has broken and dropped out of somewhere?

Is this a known thing? Any ideas?
