Getting slightly more serious about this now, even if i get cold feet and all i'm doing is buying a "long term lease" car for some relatives coming over, to sell on in a few months.... I just went hunting for cars around my area and turned up some nice 80s/A4s. Kind of the anti-polos (5 doors, big engines, all electric) but worth a shot to see how the other side live while still keeping some of the spirit (VAG, not too big - it's a jetta under there, y'think? - still kinda sporty without being lardy...)
...what do you think of the second, fifth and sixth (and last) cars off this autotrader link?

turned it into a titled link as the address broke the page!

(of course it may all be different tomorrow, i'll have to recheck)
1st - last car on this page. Looks sweet, despite a lack of pic and 160k  miles. Lots of toys and IIRC still only about £1050 insurance. N-reg any good for 2 grand?

5th and 6th seem to be broken links :( even though they worked when i had it on cheapest to most expensive. £1800 each, both L reg, both TDi, both loaded with toys - not sure which is better really, though more taken with metallic green than silver.

... and also the last one on that AT page. Looks a bit dodgy to me - 1.6 TD? In white as well = minicab.... though it has "only" done 118k for a G-plate. (But, £1295??? pricey..?) --- website link, oddly looks very similar to the other site.

or even, the cheapest one around... this link for cheapest to most expensive, and the first one.
£400, very few details but i think i can extract the reg num from that to hunt. Looks clean at that angle, but is there anything that might stop it getting thru the MOT I wonder... 17 miles and no map provided, tch tch.

and theres a few other decent looking ones in between, around £1000 and £1300...

Or is this whole thing a big nonsense as they're actually crap? And be better to get a 5-door mk4, or some totally different car?

Just in case you think im a one trick autotrader pony.... plenty of pollys about in the local area - let's play spot the storm grey GT!
or spot the glut of affordable (but overpriced?) dragon green 5-door mk4s - not to mention the cherry red "open air" (cool..)
and as a bit of fun... the astra at the bottom of this page is being sold by Kev's Motor Company. Ahem.

personnally i'd go for the 5th (green coupe) that is a lot of car for little money.
Mates bird has one (only 2.0 e though not v6) and you could fit 3 bodies in the boot theyre that big...the whole car has a made like a tank feel but goes like the clappers. (what is the clappers anyway and how does it go?)

as for re-sale value i would have thought the coupe would have held its value better too. The big engined ones are becoming almost as collectable as the early 5 cyclinder coupe's.

1.6 TD is a good engine, used in the mk2 golf and early passats. Very reliable Has 80bhp iirc so nothing special. should be faster than the 1.6 petrol though.

I dont know where that storm grey GT is but go and have a look at that ranger on page two for me. I want to know if its got a sunroof. Its alot nearer you than me (85 from me)

Spot the '88 Polo C squareback for £1,100! Who the hell does he think he's kidding?
Fair play, it's somehow only clocked up 13,000 miles in 16 years, but still.. that's insane!

quick reply i'll probably have to edit:

metzy i seriously can't afford the insurance on an audi coupe, it's mental money like over two grand. total pain in the arse, but there you go - insurnace dictated my first car and it may well my second. only now not as badly.

that's why i only suggested the ones i did  you think I wouldn't be out G40 chasing if the insurance wasn't balls?

i guess i'll leave such sweet looking fastback shenanigans til im 25?
there's a late 80s 2.3 GT one kicking about somewhere as well.

80hp i think would be fine for now, unless of course the car weighs 1.8x that of a polo or more!

edit (yep)
and starting again, to groovy:
yeah, but it's got at least two of those trims you want! :) and as far as mk2s go i bet its mint as f***!

or the K-reg 1.3 CL for all of two grand! SOMEONE's gonna be SORELY dissapointed whether that sells or it doesnt!

the 1.6 deep blue P-reg Classic just above it (on the current link as of midnight-40 9-10-04) looks sweet-as though, 66k with a small ration of toys, also 2 grand but maybe worth a larger fraction of that. might investigate and try for £1500 if this becomes serious... (risdale.. wonder where that is)

and the ranger is still 20 miles away - far enough for me to not know what that phone area code is! though i have the guys name from his email... Tim Hargest... a slight possibilty he runs a place called "Hargest motors" that can be googled?

Depends on what you want really. I am now selling my Polo, and going to buy a MK2 Golf GTi, nice! My guitarist's wife has owned it for about 7 years now, and wants to sell it on. Full VW service history. Just need to sell my Polo now.

heh i was just wondering if anyone on here knew much about them, e.g. if the ones i was looking at were any cop in the grand scheme of things really

autotrader's (and for that matter, motor mart's) java-based system that doesnt allow you to get a proper web address out for the individual cars has just shown itself to be a complete pain in the titulars... can't reliably show them to anyone or save them for looking back later in the day... seeing as the stuff changes often.

("next time" i guess screen captures would be a better idea.. not pasted direct into the thread, but hosted & linked.)
