Speedo not working & petrol gauge floats up & down

Hi everyone I know this isn’t a new topic & across the forums it has run for many years but now it’s my turn. My 97 polo has decided to do this it started with the fuel gauge & then just as I was going to change the fuel pump the speedo stopped working too. I’ve cleaned the earth wire on the gearbox, distributor, two brown wires behind distributor & the coil strap wire under the engine cover. I’ve also changed the speed sensor on the back of the gearbox & checked the fuses under the steering wheel. I’m now about to remove the instrument cluster to see if there is any visible sign of damage really hope not as I’m having trouble sourcing another one to test in its place.
Have I missed anything?
