It's been a while since I came on here. Not been doing anything with the Gti's, but I thought I would drop in & at least say Hi Alex.

One of the cars had a head gasket problem, which I fixed, but in the process I decided to do the jab "a bit better" & did a light hone in situ.

Long story short, I have a lovely running engine which turns into an oil burner after about 15 seconds & I suspect I have broken the seal between the rings & bores. Bad move.

Am I right in thinking that with head off & sump off, pistons with rods can be removed from the top so new rings can be inserted. Seems much easier than an engine / box out job, but at least then I can get an engineering shop to do the re-honing

Thoughts ?

You are correct in your thinking , head and sump off and pistons removed to fit new rings , I will add that a good machine shop can deglaze bores in situ with the right equipment.

I "have" the right equipment, in the form of a three leg honing tool, question is can I use the tools correctly ?

Seems like I should get some rings ordered, but I should probably get the head off & use my bore micrometer to confirm all is within the specs for a standard bore/piston combination first.

Bet I'll think about new big end shells while I'm in there too....
