Standard CD radio in 9N(3?) frozen

Hi
I'm new to the forum and making a plea on my daughter's behalf.
She bought a 1.2 2006 E with the standard stereo, but it appears to be frozen.
It turns on and off, but the volume knob, the radio presets and every other button does nothing when pressed.
Is this a common fault?
Would a battery off help. I seem to remember people putting stereos in bags in the freezer to reset them in my youth.
Any ideas, or is it a replacement?
