*plays on-PC copy of Bruce Springsteen's "Cover Me" at 45rpm in tribute*
yeah i know he'd never touch it, so here's some Cowcube

"the only man who could get Italian Minimalist Hardcore onto Radio 4"

God might be a better DJ, but now he's got an eclectic record selection and rambling MC to, quite literally, die for.

now the question that i've been quietly pondering for some years comes to the forefront - who, if anyone, can fill those shoes? annie nightingale??????????????? or (please? :)) someone else?

Radcliffe (just damm good music), Kershaw (the more obscure world stuff) + Harris (both his "country" and amerciana stuff) would cover about 1/3 of Peel's catalogue. I can't think who could cover the European stuff.

I'm genuinely concerned for who will take over the "championing" role. If no one does, what for the future of music in the UK? I dread to think. But it brings home how important this guy was.

However, this is missing the point entirely.

Nothing and noone could replace John Peel. The music was only part of what he contributed.

TBH, this is the first "celebrity" passing that I've actually been upset about. Caught the end of the news pulling out from work and only heard the word "John". I then spent the drive home trying to work out who it could be. I came to think of Peel and thought "surely not?"

I even used to listen to his Radio 4 stuff. Every so oftn he'd reflect on one of the stories with reference to his own family. You could just tell that he was a really nice guy.

:( Deek.

I've posted replies to this topic on a couple of other forums...

I was genuinely upset when I heard the news and actually fell asleep crying last night WTF?

John has had the most profound effect on my musical tastes from a very early age and so has been very upsetting to hear of his death.

As a baby my mum played me John's programmes, when I was about 7 years old I remember my mum recording his shows... I then made sure I listened to him whenever I could.

Who else could get away with playing Gabba Techno (at 72rpm lol) next to Dub Reggae, next to Punk, next to Jungle?

Rest in Peace John... You won't be forgotten
