Ok I know that the Gamma is a 4 split unit, where as the Beta is only a 2 split unit...that part I get....but now, on the Gamma unit the tape (casette) deck's eject buttons are on the left of the deck load bay - but on the Beta unit it's on the right of the load bay - right??? ...and why??? Are there more differences than just the visual differences?

Right,
As you say, Beta is two way and Gamma is four way. The reason VW usually fit Beta stereos in lower spec models is because they don't have rear speakers (like mine, though hopefully to be overcome soon

).
I really couldn't say what id there would be any difference in quality of play but personally I wouldn't have thought so

Strange....here the all Polo's are fitted with Beta systems - as an option on the base 1.4 and 1.6, and as standard equipment on the 1.6 C/line and TDI. The C/line and TDi also comes standard with 8 speakers connected to the Beta.
I must say, my Clio Privilege had a 4 way split system with 6 speakers...but the Polo's sound is so much better and loads more buttons to play with - tempting. I do miss the stalk control though - u could flick through channels, change from radio, to cd, to tape deck to cd-shuttle, volume and mute with the flick of a few buttons. The volume was also speed dependant - the faster you went, the louder it got and vice versa - which was really cool!

The Gamma tape loading system is electonic along with the ff/rw, If I remember on the Beta you have to press the button in to manually eject the tape.... Maybe that's why it's on another side because there more room for something else?
There are a few other differences too but I can't remember.
Can the beta be used as a CD changer controller?
James.

Slightly different over here, Beta is the Bottom of the range stereo (with four speakers) and Gamma is the totr with 8 speakers.

I've got the Beta unit and a 6 disc dash-mounted changer, so yes.
