What do I actually need to lower my car? 'cos I've seen these lowering springs on eBay for like £30 odd quids and I thought - hang on a mins, it can' t be that cheap/easy?

Is there more work or parts I need to get to lower my car? 9N that is.

its not as easy as u think

i was thinking just a cheap set of springs (such as Eibach) which lowers the car 30mm would be good value....... but we have the crappy standard shocks (not sports 1s u get on sports models and option on SE models) so i think its a tough ride...... bump stops are needed according to Nelson... he had -30mm eibach on his old 1.2.

to do this lowering properly, get coilovers, and they cost over £500. this can lower around 70mm which mole "had"on his 1.4 9n. Go for a set of 17s and lower it with coilovers and will look awsome!

Well I ask some people at VW today and they recon that if I jus want the looks I can get those springs (lets say from eBay) but it won't do anything for performance, just for the looks.

He also mentioned it "might" make it less comfortable as in the car might roll more?

But would it be alright just to get the springs? 'cos I doubt I can afford a coil-over system.

But is it worth paying for something just because you can afford something "yet". Might as well just wait.

I've got those 30mm springs in the garage and i doubt i'll ever fit them, i'll probably get coilovers eventually.

But is it alright jus for the "looks"?

just for looks....and a tough ride too......cus the standard shocks wont keep up with the sports springs.

hmm how "tough" are we talking about? You mean you can see it literally like "hop" went going along the streets or something? Ya mean? Like some cars you can see the car body going over like little bumps?

Ive got spax -35 mm springs only on my 1.4tdi 9n. bought from ebay for £10 still in the box., fitted them myself and had no real probs.in my opinion the car does handle better as well as look better. the standard shocks are a bit useless as i've experienced a few bobbing up and down moments, so they should be changed really. but overall the handling is much better, ride quality is definatley firmer but i feel much more linked to the road. if you can only afford springs doit but get some from a known brand, try the eibachs i think there better.

i have the apex 35mm springs, fitted them then due to insurance had to take them off. so they are sitting in a box in my gargae for now.

but yes these guys are right, when you just do springs its mainly looks you are going for; the ride will be come firmer and you will feel more in control of your car though. if you want the handling for the track, then you will need the coilovers or just a proper sports set-up which will set you back a few hundred

How much will the insurance be affected 'cos that's another issue isn't it like you 2fast4u? How much did those Apex one's cost mate?

my company insurance allowed my alloys, so i assumed the springs would be ok. while they were getting fitted i rang up to inform them and they told me to get them off as they wouldnt insure me with them on.

so im not sure the amounts that the insurance would go up.

but my borther lowered his old mk2 golf 60mm (shocks and springs) and that went up around £50 for the year. so its not very much, and i can't see coilovers changing it much either. all just depends on your insurance company.
i know CIS dont charge for mods that change the look of the car, but charge a hell of alot for engine mods.

with springs you will find the ride is bumpy, on my old mk4 it was bad on a long trip! save up for coilovers! i got mine for £300 (second had, but spot on)
