short vs tall block engines?

Can someone out there help educate me about short / tall block engines please?

Reason i wanna know is... to increase the engine capacity and still be able to fit it in my mk3 coupe, it has to be a short block engine, right?

What cars will i find these in?

A while ago, someone sent me a URL for engine codes and what cars they derived from, but it didnt say if they were tall or short block engines:-(

I need facts & figures please peeps, coz i really wanna put a larger displacement engine in 'Don Polio' as soon as possible (55bhp sucks more dick than the pope does!).

Could i use a 1.8 Golf GTi 8V motor and gearbox from a mk2?

Has anyone else thought along these lines before?

I know a newer engine would maybee be more suitable, but....im a strong believer in old skool:-D (and... i got no BLING BLING, lol)

Come on peeps, i wanna be reading stuff to help me decide ;-)

Cheers.

As suggested to me by a friend.... could it be a tall block engine has a crank throw of 92.8mm... & a short block engine has a crank throw of 86.4mm?

What you all think?

Cheers.

needs to be a short block to use standard engine mounts. Biggest engine you can use is a 1600 from a mk4 polo or mk3 golf. so ABU AEA AEE engines for 1600cc (not inc 16v as i dont know that one) ABD AEX AFH for common 1400cc engines (AFH being 16v)

Mk3 manifolds will fit an ABD head but I don't know if an ABD head will fit an AEA or AEE.

Thats right the ABD is compatible with mk3 polo components. Also the head is the same as a 1.3 polo, but theyre totally different on the later 1400s and all 1600s

The 1400 conversion Ive done utilises an ABD block and head. :D

specifics...

Anyone care to give me the low down on creating a 1600cc Polio from either... mk4 Polio or mk3 Golf, then... which engine code has the most BHP / torque out of the 3 codes listed,? Also what spec Polio / Golf would that engine be in?

Questions, questions, lol

Cheers.

Im guessing the AEE engine is the best one, highest compression ratio and also has mutipoint fuel injection. Which is nice.
