Okay, so i have no doubt this topic has been battered before but i'm looking at what exhaust i can get to replace my std one. I want a stainless system - can you get these though? (or a cat back if not). The only one i can find is the DTM kind - and i don't like the look of them....even on Mark2 golf gtis... Ideally i want straight twin round pipes to come through the bumper - so i need a place thats going to do a good job on cutting the bumper (god have i seen some dodgy ones!!!). P.S - yep i know about powerflow but the idea of somebody just making one up on the spot doesn't fill me with confidence that it'll be any good. Last thing - i'm after performance more than noise.

Powerflow or longlife are your bet - don't worry about the quality as they're better than the pre-made systems - it's not just a spanner monkey doing it, they do actually know what they're doing. Also, they can tailor the system completely to your requirements, both have a lifetime guarantee, and if my memory serves correctly they both use a better grade of stainless. A mate of mine had one, and never had any problems with it.

I agree. Powerflow/Long Life is the way to go - I know for a fact that if you go to Powerflow, you get a lifetime gaurantee, which requires you to visit a Powerflow dealer every 12 months to get the system checked over. Sounds good to me! But I'm skint

i've heard some of the powerflow* dealers are better than others depending which one u goto exactly, so i'd see if anyone had used any of those from the selection already!

A friend in another club has used the Leicester one and I've seen his exhaust (up close and personal) - very good indeed

I always thought Scorpion were good till I got hacked off with a cat back system I had on a Senator 24V (it had been decatted already) and cut it up and there was a flaming restriction in the pipework - I mean a rally big restriction 12 inch long section of 1 inch internal bore on a 2 1/2 inch outer pipe...... That got cut out and the car was fantastic afterwards....

Performance manufacturers don't neccesarilly make peformance systems

Jetex and Magnex used to be good for perfomance but I don't know about on a Olop......

Recomendation from others in a club normally sends you in the right direction IMHO

And anyone know how quiet you can make them. I'd like an aftermarket system but don't want anything boomy.

A budget of about £300 should suffice I guess, thats what I'm aiming at anyway. If you go to a custom exhaust supplier like Powerflow they can build it to your specs, and make it as quiet or as loud as you want - usually thru the use of baffles, which you can later remove should you wish. My sister's bloke had a stainless straight-thru exhaust on his 6n 1.4 16v, with all the baffles in, and that was nicely subtle, but sounded great at high revs on its way past you

Basically it was sporty but subtle, which is ideal. He says it was about £175 but I reckon it may have been a bit more than that - that was for a cat-back s/s straight-thru, finished behind the rear bumper like the OE zorst.

ive heard that powerflow zorsts lose low end torque....

Isn't the loss of torque related to the back pressure. I'm sure there is a fine line between the right amount of back pressure and not enough. In that if the bore of the exhaust is too big, there isn't enough back pressure. Could be wrong but i'm sure this is a big issue cos engineers spend lots of time and money developing the standard OEM exhaust for a car. They don't just go 'cool that'll fit just bang it on'.
