Rev counter has gone mad...

So, driving to work this morning, glance down at the dash, notice revs (according to the rev counter anyway) are off the scale! Got to work, turned engine off and the needle makes it's way back down to just above 4000 instead of just above 0 where it usually is!

In all other respects, it's working fine but is constantly showing +4100rpm over the actual revs!

Anyone have any ideas how to fix this before I take it to the stealership on Tuesday? I've got a nasty feeling it's something electrical :?

Actually, it sounds like a mechanical problem with the dial. Which is probably worse... :(

If a good smack doesn't work then you probably will have to go get it fixed :(

Here's an update to close this off...had a new instrument cluster fitted today at the local dealers - part was about £200 + 2 hours VW labour...fortunately all done under my warranty :)

By the way, if anyone else needs a new instrument cluster for their GTi, current lead time on the part is just shy of 4 weeks!
