Flat battery and...

I left my car for 1 week in the garage and when I went to start it, there were no lights from the dashboard! Uggg.
It turned over normally but would not start - the fuel pump primed up okay though...
So, I guessed the battery was flat enough that it needed a little more to make something electrical work ignition wise.
I jumped it from my wife's car - all the dash lights came on and it started first time.
Now what I can't work out, is if the car turns over with no problem, why didn't it start
Where's the electricity in the coil and ignition when you need it most?
